Abstract
Abstract: Of 1,500 consecutive patients referred to a single medical firm in Freetown, 54 (3·6%) suffered from amoebic infection and all had active disease; 31 (57%) had a liver abscess and 21 (39%) died. Severe bowel ulceration was found to be much more dangerous than liver abscess and both intestinal perforation and large abscesses of the liver were often remarkable silent. Although the necessity for prompt diagnosis and treatment is recognized, the condition may quite easily be missed and even when specific treatment is given, a fatal outcome may not be prevented.
